Western Australian Alcohol & Drug Authority Dual Diagnosis Project

The Dual Diagnosis Project was discontinued in 1996/97

The WAADA Dual Diagnosis Project was a two year project funded through the National Mental Health Strategy in 1996/7 as a response to lack of resources for people with a dual diagnosis highlighted by the Burdekin Report.

Due to its limited life span, it was decided that resource development, education and training would be the focus of the project rather than provision of clinical services that might be withdrawn at the end of the project.

The programme was designed to raise community awareness of Dual Diagnosis issues and to develop resources and structures to assist clinicians to provide services to dual diagnosis clients at the presenting agency.

It was aimed primarily at service providers in mental health and alcohol & other drug services with an overall philosophy of harm minimisation.

Midas has not been able to obtain a report or outcome study following the completion of the project. However, it did result in the production of a booklet titled "A Register of Contacts for People Working with Mental Health and Alcohol or Other Drug Issues" and at least two half day workshops in dual disorder.

Following a 1998 change in health care delivery policy which saw health services (including mental health an drug services) contracted out, people with a Dual Disorder are now referred to a special team set up to work with "complex problems" which are beyond the capacity of other health care providers.
