James Fletcher Hospital
This is a State Government service, providing 16 beds for people with
a dual diagnosis. The unit is one of three psychiatric admission wards
for the Newcastle Hospital. Unlike the more traditional wards, it
accepts clients from anywhere within the cachement area.
The programme is a fairly standard psychiatric care programme, but is
very active, with groups focusing on: |
- self esteem
- anger management
- communications skills
- drug use
- relapse prevention
- relationships
|
The ward has close links with Kirkwood house
(Drug & Alcohol Service) which has a long history of working with
mentally ill people who have drug problems.
The approach of the service includes a family focus, with specific
family groups running for several hours each week (currently on
Thursdays, 1:30 to 4:30).
As with all Health Department services, clients are generally not
charged and elligibility is determined by residency.
As the programme has developed, it has developed a strong community
outreach and aftercare philosophy. Engagement and Motivational
Interviewing are strongly supported and the approaches taken by the
staff are innovative and proactive.
