Health Check DVD: Health information for recently arrived African communities in Australia

This resource provides recently arrived African communities with clear information about health checks and procedures in Australia.

Through drama sequences the video answers the following questions:
Health Check


What is a Medicare Card and where can it be used?
What does Bulk Billing mean?
Why is it important to have your children immunised?
Why is it important to wash your hands with soap?
Why is it important to arrive on time to see the doctor?
How do you call for an ambulance in an emergency?

The DVD can be viewed in either English, Dinka, Kirundi, Swahili, Krio, Juba Arabic or Liberian Pidgin English and runs for approx 16 minutes.

This booklet offers newly-arrived refugees and migrants essential information about the health care system in NSW and how to use it.

Topics include:

  • How can I make myself understood if I don’t speak English?
  • How do I pay for health care?
  • How do I see a doctor?
  • What health services are available in my local area?
  • What other services for migrants and refugees are there in NSW?
  • What are my health care rights?
  • What do I do in an emergency?

Bilingual community educators also run community education sessions based on this guide, working closely with Adult Migrant English Program providers such as acl.

Talking about Medicines

Produced by the NSW Refugee Health Service, 2005
Format: Audio CDs
Languages: Southern Sudanese Arabic, Dinka and Krio

This resource discusses the safe use of medications. Each CD records a doctor from the relevant community and one of RHS’ Bilingual Community Educators discussing the safe use of medications, with a short musical introduction.

Topics include:

  • Why is it important to complete a course of medications?
  • Why can it be dangerous to share medications or use old medications?
  • Why don’t doctors in Australia give you medications every time you visit?
  • Why do doctors here often prescribe tablets instead of giving injections like they do in many parts of Africa? Aren’t injections the strongest medicine?

They are designed to be heard on radio but can also be used in waiting rooms and in group sessions. The recordings are between 7 - 14.00 minutes in length.

Accessing Health Services

Eating and Living in Australia: Information to Shop Well, Eat Well and Feel Well

This pamphlet provides newly-arrived refugees information about diet and healthy living. It was adapted from The Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture Inc.'s Food and Nutrition Project for Recent Arrivals from Refugee Backgrounds

  • drinking water
  • keeping active

Bilingual community educators also run a 4-6 week group program on Health Eating and Living in Australia in a number of refugee langugaes including Arabic, Assyrian, Dinka, Krio and Somali.
