This Division works within the Bankstown Health Service to develop it’s capacity to be responsive to the needs of the community. The Division offers services to the people of the Bankstown LGA through 11 Community Health and 7 Allied Health Teams.

Child, Adult and Family Team

The Child, Adult and Family Team provides a range of assessment, therapy and support services for children aged 0 – 12 and their families who live in the Bankstown local government area. Please feel free to discuss any concerns you may have regarding your children with our intake worker on 9780-2777.

Family Counselling
For children and their families who may be experiencing emotional, behavioural and family problems. Individual, family and group therapy are offered.

Parents often seek advice and help for their children because of fears, unhappiness, disobedience, aggression, or reaction to parent's separation. Counselling can also assist parents in managing toddlers and young children who may need help with behaviour, sleeping, toilet training and so on.

Adult Counselling
For adults who may be experiencing distress, emotional problems or difficulty coping with life issues.

Parenting Skills Courses
Positive Parenting (Triple P) Program is run regularly to assist parents in the management of their child/children’s behavioural problems.

Family Care
For parents of infants and young children who may seek help with unsettled babies, sleep problems, breast and bottle feeding, weaning, nutrition and so on. This service also aims to help parents who may be feeling stressed or anxious following the birth of a child.

Speech Pathology
For children experiencing communication problems, such as slow speech development, difficulties understanding others, poor expression of ideas or problems saying sounds.

Occupational Therapy
For children experiencing difficulties in performing daily activities such as play, self care and motor coordination tasks, including handwriting.

Physiotherapy
For children experiencing suspected movement difficulties such as babies who are floppy or stiff, babies and children who appear to be awkward or are slow to achieve milestones such as crawling or walking.

Child Development
For young children who are slow in their development, and for children and adolescents aged 0-18 years who have physical disabilities.

Community Nutrition Team

The Community Nutrition Team conducts health promotion projects which aim to improve the nutrition of people in Bankstown and help reduce diet related disease.

Additional Nutrition Services Available

  N-I-K News is a quarterly newsletter updating the community on the most recent nutrition information, new products and healthy recipes.
  Eating for A Healthy Heart is a fun morning learning about cholesterol, fat, fibre, reading food labels, shopping tips and modifying recipes. To book phone 9722 8491.
  Dietitians hold Outpatients Clinics for dietary assessment and education at Bankstown Hospital. You will need a referral from your local doctor. To book phone 9722 7200.

Counselling Services
We provide counselling for young people aged 12-18 years and their families and carers on a range of issues, eg depression, anxiety, suicidal concerns, relationship issues, eating disorders, alcohol and drug issues, sexual health issues etc. We offer both individual and family therapy.

Health Promotion and Health Education Services
We provide health promotion and education services for young people, families and carers, education professionals and other community based service providers on a range of health issues relevant to the well-being of young people.

Community Development and Access Services
  We collaborate with other government and community based services to promote the development of community resources relevant for young people.
  We advocate for and assist young people and their families / carers in accessing health related services.
  A Vietnamese Ethnic Health Worker is also available to assist with referrals, advocacy and programs.

Dental Services

This service is available for all school age children from kindergarten to 15 years of age.

Children between the ages of 15 – 18 years need to be in school or a dependent of a current health care card holder to be eligible for services.

We offer prioritised treatment according to need.

Adult Dental Service

Adult Services are available at the Yagoona Dental Clinic only.

We offer priority based dental health treatment

To be eligible clients must have residential eligibility and hold a current Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card or Commonwealth Senior Health Card and be over 18 years of age.

Dentures for pensioners scheme available only to Pension Card holders and/or Health care Card holders.

Drug and Alcohol Service

Counselling and referral for individuals with problems in respect to alcohol, legal and prescription drugs and tobacco

Advice and referral for home detoxification, methadone, in-patient detoxification and rehabilitation programs

Counselling and referral for gambling problems

Counselling and referral for individuals with dual diagnosis problems (ie people who have both a drug and alcohol problem and a psychiatric disorder)

Counselling for partners or family of affected individuals

Education on drug and alcohol issues to community groups on request

Needle and syringe exchange service - provides clean using equipment and condoms as part of a HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B & C prevention strategy

Ethnic Health Services

Ethnic Health Workers assist people of non-English speaking backgrounds make full use of health services. They also provide specific services which are appropriate to their clients' culture and language. These services include:

promoting better health

establishing groups for health education and support

providing consultancy services to other health services

Four Ethnic Health Workers are available at Bankstown Community Health Service covering the following languages:

Health Promotion

Health Promotion organises a variety of projects and campaigns to help people keep themselves healthy. It works jointly with the Health Service, Bankstown City Council and other government and community organisations. Current health promotion projects include:

organising the annual Heart Week Walk

improving access to healthy foods for children

preventing breast and cervical cancer

increasing social support networks for women in Villawood

preventing falls in older people

diabetes education programs in Arabic, Italian and Macedonian

supporting Aboriginal networks

improving quality of life for patients after heart attack

reducing smoking in the Arabic-speaking community

using arts programs to work on young people’s issues

working with Bankstown City Council to create a healthy environment

Bankstown Health Service employs a Health Promotion Manager and physical activity project worker. There are also health promotion workers in the Nutrition, Women’s Health, Youth Health and Aged Care teams.

Primary Health Nursing Service including Palliative Care

Hours: Weekdays 8.30am - 5.00pm with a limited after hours and weekend service for home nursing clients whose treatment cannot be interrupted.

Nurses operate from community-based clinics, either in Primary schools or in Early Childhood Clinics. They provide:

Home Nursing
This may include dressings and injections. Nurses also provide palliative care, assessment, advice and support.

Ambulatory Care
There is an extended hours service for people requiring acute treatment in the home. This is done in liaison with hospitals.

Health Promoting Schools
Screening of children referred by teachers or parents.

Vision and hearing screening
Screening of 3 – 5 year olds can be arranged by making an appointment at an Early Childhood Clinic or sometimes through pre-schools.

Health Education and Health Promotion
This may be to individuals or groups.

Early Childhood services
Clinics are available at several locations across the Bankstown local government area. They provide screening, developmental checks and parenting groups as well as an advisory service for babies, toddlers and preschoolers. Clinics operate by appointment. A drop-in breastfeeding clinic is run on Mon, Tues, Thurs and Friday at one of the clinics. Please ring the clinic or 9205-4244 to check operating times.

Palliative Care
Palliative care is about providing both physical and emotional support and care to people living with a life threatening illness, and also to their families. This service is offered in liaison with General Practitioners.

Sexual Assault Service

Bankstown Sexual Assault Service offers free and confidential help to adult men and women, children and young people, non offending family members and friends to help deal with the impact of recent or past sexual assault.

Stuttering Unit

Specialist speech pathology service for people who stutter. The Stuttering Unit provides:

Assessments and treatment for all age groups - preschool to adults.

Information and education on stuttering to community groups, preschools, schools and employers on request.

Women's Health Services

Women’s Health looks at the connections between women’s role in society, their special needs as women and the different things that can affect their health throughout life. Important issues include women’s emotional and mental wellbeing, preventing violence against women, sexual and reproductive health, and the early detection of breast and cervical cancers. Women’s Health aims to improve health for all women and has special projects directed towards older women, Aboriginal women, women from non-English speaking backgrounds and socially isolated women.

Education Sessions and groups on women's health issues eg. contraception, menopause, assertiveness.

Bilingual community education programs in women's health for women of NESB in many different languages. Child care provided if needed.

Support and resources for community development initiatives in women's health.

Nutrition and Dietetics Service

The Nutrition and Dietetics Service provides both an inpatient and an outpatient service for adults and children. Please feel free to ring and discuss any concerns or questions you have regarding nutrition.

Services Provided:
Inpatient Services
For patients admitted to the hospital requiring diet therapy or advice. The dietitians look after the nutritional care of patients during their stay, provide information and if needed follow up support in an outpatient clinic.

Outpatient Services
Regular outpatient clinics are run for clients requiring dietary advice. Clients are individually assessed and educated. Follow up support is arranged in the clinics as needed. The clinics are held in the Allied Health Building at the hospital. Children can also be referred to these clinics. Dietitians are also involved in outpatient clinics and group education as part of the Diabetes Centre and Oncology Unit. Bookings are taken through the unit involved.

Eating For A Healthy Heart
A half-day programme is held at Bankstown Community Health Centre once every six weeks on a Tuesday. Topics covered include cholesterol, fats, reading food levels, shopping tips, modifying recipes, to book contact Cardiology Unit secretary on 9722-8491

Moving Forward With Your Weight
A new 6 session programme for people wishing to lose weight. Information is provided on healthy eating, stress management and increasing activity levels.

Occupational Therapy

Physical and medical problems may interfere with a person’s daily tasks. For example, home management tasks, work, leisure and community activities.

Occupational Therapists at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital provide services to:

Inpatient Wards – Assessment, treatment, and initial follow up, is available to all inpatients admitted to acute medical/surgical wards, rehabilitation wards and a variety of clinics (orthopaedic, oncology).

Outpatients – Home and community assessments, splinting, and various health promotion groups are offered (arthritis education, carpal tunnel).

A Specific Outpatient Rehabilitation Service is also available. (see section on OPRT)

Occupational Therapists at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital are concerned with:

Teaching or retraining clients methods in how to manage daily tasks, such as dressing, bathing and cooking.

Providing therapy to improve physical and cognitive functioning.

Recommending ways to improve a person’s safety and independence in their home and community environment by providing equipment and/or arranging modifications. Home visit assessments are carried out if required.

Providing ideas on how to save energy.

Making custom splints for clients with various hand injuries and arthritis.

Orthoptic Service

Orthoptists provides assistance with eye problems including:

Assessment of children’s vision and eye coordination.

Investigation, diagnosis and non-surgical management of abnormalities of eye movement and strabismus (squint).

Programs to enable clients who are visually impaired or have field loss to make optimal use of remaining vision.

Investigations of diseases of the eye in conjunction with Ophthalmologists (Eye Doctors).

The Orthoptics service is available for children and adults. We are closely linked with other community and hospital based services, which allows us to provide quality Orthoptic assessment, treatment and information.

Outpatient Rehabilitation Team (OPRT)

The OPRT Service provides short-term intensive Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Rehabilitation programs to adults who require a team rehabilitation approach.

This Service provides assessment, treatment, education, arranges equipment and follows-up patients referred to the service. This may occur either within the hospital or in the community as necessary. Home visits may be arranged to assess the person’s safety in their home and arrange for modifications if necessary, or to set up a home exercise program.

Referral Criteria
This rehabilitation service is provided to adult residents living in the Bankstown local government area who meet the following criteria:

Following discharge from the Rehabilitation or Acute wards at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital (or from other Hospitals) after having such conditions as a stroke, amputation or lower limb orthopaedic surgery who require rehabilitation

Living in the community and require rehabilitation following an acute episode eg stroke or experiencing a deterioration in function

Generally excluded conditions include traumatic brain injury, stroke occurring over 2 years ago and complete spinal injury

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy services are provided at a ward and at an outpatient level.

Physiotherapists on the wards can provide:

Treatment for respiratory conditions eg asthma and pneumonia

Assistance to help people to move and function as independently as possible eg after a stroke, or following surgery such as a hip replacement.

Education programs eg cardiac rehabilitation, diabetes education.

Physiotherapists in the outpatient service provide:

Treatment for people with muscular, orthopaedic, respiratory and neurological conditions.

Plaster changes by appointment.

A specific Outpatient Rehabilitation Service is also available.

Groups
Group programs are conducted for people with knee problems and chronic back pain. A developing initiative is a group specifically for people with movement difficulties, for example, following a stroke.

Social Work

Social Work is provided for both inpatients and outpatients of the hospital.

Inpatient Service
Social Work provides assistance with social, psychological and emotional issues that patients and their families may have as a result of their illness and hospitalisation.
Particular issues may be around coping with the illness, separation from home and family, bereavement and loss, drug and alcohol issues, financial worries and concerns regarding discharge home, need for community supports for alternative care such as hostel and nursing home.

Outpatient Service
Social Work has only a very limited general outpatient service which provides initial assessment and referral on to other community based services. Other outpatient services are attached to specific units and clients are usually seen as part of a clinic visit rather than in the community (eg Oncology, Antenatal).

Groups
A monthly Alzheimers’ Carers Support Group is run by Social Work and is open to any carer of a dementia sufferer in the Bankstown Area. Social Work is also involved in other Group programs run by specific units including:

Antenatal Young Parent’s Group
Cardiac Rehabilitation Education Group
Oncology Education and Support Group

Speech Pathology Services

Speech Pathology services are provided to both adult and paediatric inpatients as well as a limited outpatient adult service.

A speech pathologist on the Aged Care Assessment Team also provides adult outpatient and domiciliary services.

Speech pathologists are involved in the assessment and management of:

Communication difficulties resulting from a stroke, dementia, progressive neurological disorders and cognitive deficits eg slurred speech, using inappropriate words, inability to form sentences.

Voice disorders and laryngectomy.

Swallowing disorders eg choking and recurrent chest infections from aspiration.

Paediatric feeding difficulties

Communication and swallowing disorders in patients with a tracheostomy.

Speech pathologists provide patient and family education as well as community, staff and student consultation, education and health promotion.
