Clinical Information Services

The Clinical Information Service comprises of several units, which collectively contribute to the provision of clinical information to both internal and external customers.

The service operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, facilitating the timely availability of medical records for patient care and access to medical records for review outside of office hours.

The key functions of the Clinical Information Service are as follows:

Casemix & Statistics Unit

  • Abstraction of clinical information from patient episodes of care and translating this data into clinical codes using a classification system for casemix purposes.
  • Provision of casemix data to health care professionals.
  • Extraction, collation and analysis of hospital statistics.
  • Training of staff in the use of the hospital patient administration system and monitoring of transaction errors.

Forms Coordination

  • Design, modification and production of forms to facilitate the collection of health information and improve communication between health professionals.
  • Medico-legal and Clinical Typing Unit
  • Processing of medicolegal requests in line with legislation.
  • Respond to requests from health care professionals for patient information.
  • Ensure the privacy and confidentiality of patient information is maintained organisation wide.
  • Transcription of outpatient letters for the purposes of GP and specialists’ communication.

Records Control & Processing

  • Timely retrieval for the purposes of patient care, research, data collection and quality improvement activities.
  • Processing of medical records post patient discharge.

Food Services

Our Role

  • To provide nutritious and attractive meals to all staff and patients within the constraints of the hospital budget.
  • To promote the optimum “Healthy Lifestyle” menu philosophy to all customers by way of the selective menu offered and accompanied, where possible, by an explanation of the foods used on the menu together with nutritional advice.

General Services provides:

General Services is committed:

  • To provide a clean environment to enable patients, visitors and staff to be safe and comfortable during their time at the Hospital and Community facilities.
  • To ensure that linen supplies are in a cost effective manner, and by regular liaison with unit users a high standard of efficiency is achieved and maintained.
  • To provide and environment free from pests and vermin.

Information Technology

Provision of Information Technology Support for all information technology products.

The Information Technology Department plays a unique role in providing a service for Bankstown Health Service in the provision of Information Technology Support for all IT products such as PCs, Vax Equipment, telephones and paging system and mobile phones.

The primary function of the Information Technology Department is to ensure that all relevant staff are fully aware of how to use the various systems made available by the Health Service by providing quality training, and timely support when needed.

IT Department is involved with all aspects of information technology from project/system design and development through to implementation, maintenance and evaluation. This service is available to all staff of the Bankstown Health Service.

The Goals of the Information Technology Department are to ensure the best possible quality of training and support is provided to staff by:

  • Providing access and eligibility to services on the basis of priority.
  • Continually evaluating services, and where appropriate developing new ones.
  • Encouraging staff to be involved in professional development to ensure knowledge and skills remain current.

Departmental Objectives

The objectives of the Information Technology Department are to:

  • Ensure that the best possible quality of service is provided to all appropriate staff.
  • Encourage staff education, so they can more understand information technology and can participate in developing information technology within the Bankstown Health Service.
  • Assist in evaluating services provided and where appropriate revise or assist in developing new services.
  • Maintain close interdepartmental communication so that the most effective and efficient services and facilities are provided.
  • Promote awareness of the role of Information Technology Department in the health-care environment both within the hospital and the community in order that efficient and effective health care be given.
  • Provide a program of staff development in the form of continuing education which will encourage the professional development of staff and ensure a high standard of service is provided.
  • Ensure the department functions as efficiently as possible within the available resources.

Physical Resources

Providing an acceptable standard of Maintenance, Repairs, Inspections and Alterations.

The Physical Resource Service provides the following services:

  • Electrical
  • Refrigeration
  • Carpentry
  • Gardening
  • Hydraulics
  • Mechanical Fitting
  • Painting
  • Purchasing

These services may be provided with the use of in-house staff or via contracted works.

Installation & Repairs
To carry out all works in accordance with Australian Standards Guidelines, OH&S Act & Regulations and Supply Authority Regulations etc.

Breakdown Service:
To provide an efficient breakdown service with 24 hour, 7 day per week coverage.

Plant Maintenance:
To establish planned maintenance procedures and checks to ensure Hospitals compliance with Australian Standards, OH&S Regulations etc.

Physical Resource Service believe that patients, visitors and staff be treated with respect and without discrimination and to support the clinical performance of the Hospital by providing an acceptable standard of Maintenance, Repairs, Inspections and Alterations. To provide the highest quality service to all customers of Bankstown Health Service.

Security and Fire Safety

A safer working environment for staff, patients and visitors.

Our Role
The role of the Security & Fire Safety Department is a supportive role aimed towards a safer working environment for staff, patients and visitors.

Security Management Objectives

  • The protection of life i.e. Patients, Staff and Visitors from harm and reasonable fear of harm.
  • The protection of Hospital Staff, Patients and Visitors property from theft, misuse and vandalism.
  • The maintenance of an acceptable level of order, control and safety within the Hospital and surrounding grounds.

Fire Management Objectives
The objectives for Fire Safety Management is to protect life and property from fire by:

  • Minimising the chance of fire.
  • Ensuring early warning of fire and the safe removal of staff, patients and visitors from the effects of fire.
  • Restricting the spread of fire and
  • Quickly and safely extinguishing fire.

Supply

Receiving, storing and distributing goods to the Services Customers.

Storeman

Our Role
To receive and distribute goods to all Service customers of Bankstown Health Service. To liaise with internal customers and Area Purchasing & Logistics to develop best practices in inventory management and systems.

Objectives
To provide an efficient service in accordance with Department of Health guidelines, Area policies and procedures and Bankstown Health Policy in the provision of supplies to its customers.

Switchboard

The Switchboard Department is committed to providing a customer focused service. We are responsible for receiving general enquiries from the public and quickly assist them in getting the information they are after. We also deal with enquiries from internal areas throughout the Health Service from staff who request assistance.

The staff in the Switchboard are responsible for alerting all Emergency Teams once the emergency has been activated and ensuring all correct procedures have been followed and appropriate people aware of the situations.

The Operators are constantly updating telephone information so that they can give accurate information when required.

We operate a 24 hour, 7 day a week service.
