Pre and Post Natal Depression

Karitane's Parent and Baby Day Unit, known as Jade House was opened in 1996.

It is a specialised day stay facility for women with severe pre and post-natal depression.

Services provided include:
  • Sessional psychiatric service
  • Prescription and monitoring of medication if required
  • Individual and couple supportive therapy
  • Group Therapies which include a Parenting Issues Group and Anxiety Management Group
  • Day stay where appropriate
  • Parentcrafting

Referrals may be made by general practitioners, Family Care Cottages, Early Childhood Nurses/Primary Health Nurses, Psychologists, Community Health services and Parentcraft Units.

Referral Criteria:

  • Woman 18 years and over
  • Must live in Local Government Areas of South Western Sydney Area Health Service ie. Bankstown, Fairfield, Liverpool, Campbelltown, Camden-Wollondilly and Bowral.
  • Pregnant or postpartum up to 12 months
  • Have a diagnosis of or be at risk of developing a perinatal mood disorder

Staff in this unit include Registered Nurses with specialist qualifications in Child and Family Health and/or Mental Health, Enrolled Nurses with Parentcraft or Mothercraft qualifications, Allied Health Personnel and a sessional psychiatrist.

Clinical support is provided to the unit by the South West Sydney Area Health Service (SWSAHS) Paediatric Mental Health Team under the direction of Professor Bryanne Barnett.

Education to Health Professional

Jade House also offers education programmes on perinatal mood disorders to Health Professionals. These include training in the Edinburgh Post-natal Depression Scale (EPDS) and group skills.
