The Residential Family Care Unit provides professional care and guidance on an inpatient basis for families with infants and young children.
This service promotes a self care model which is flexible and responsive to the client’s individual needs such as transcultural issues. Karitane believes in empowering clients by facilitating learning and by assisting clients to develop skills to enable them to function effectively.
Whilst in the unit, parents have access to the following professionals:
- Child and Family Health Registered Nurses
- Enrolled Mothercraft and Parentcraft Nurses
- Lactation Consultants
- Paediatricians
- Social Workers and Psychologists
- Psychiatrists
As the Residential Family Care Unit is a tertiary facility, admission requires a
professional referral and pre-admission interview.
Being a public hospital, both public and private admissions are accepted. To minimise
family disruption parent and baby are admitted with boarder accommodation available for
partners (there is a small fee for this). Siblings (up to the age of 5 years) are also
encouraged to stay in the unit .
In keeping with Karitane's holistic approach clients may benefit from services such as
massage, hairdressing and relaxation therapy.
