Patient Transfers out of Liverpool

ADULT

ICU registrar to find an appropriate bed at another hospital.

Ring Air-Ambulance 9693 5333 for all transfers, road or air.

PAEDIATRIC

Contact the paediatric ICU registrar at Westmead on 9845 0000 who will find a bed and arrange transfer.

Helicopter transfers must be agreed to by the ICU consultant on call. Refer to SWSAHS transfer guidelines for most appropriate mcthod

Remember to give a direct telephone number so that other agencies can ring back easily

Check patient:

ABC must be stable before the patient can be transferred.

A & B : If in any doubt about airway and breathing, intubate and ventilate. Insert ICC for all haemo / pneumothoraces, no matter how small.

C : Two large bore intravenous lines attached to pump sets with blood and colloids en route. Insert indwelling urinary catheter attached to hourly measuring device.

Never transfer a patient who is haemodynamically unstable due to suspected intra-abdominalhaemorrhage. This must be corrected prior to transfer.

It is difficult to do much in the back of a moving ambulance or helicopter so the patient must be well prepared.
