For 2005 all Basic Physician Trainees will be appointed to a new training network including terms within Royal Prince Alfred, Bankstown, Balmain, Bathurst, Dubbo and Alice Springs Hospitals).  A range of subspecialty terms are available at Bankstown that are accredited for basic physician training towards FRACP

Advanced Trainees:


Vocational training positions are available for Registrars in post basic training subject to approval by the RACP.

Gastroenterology – 2 positions.

Two Advanced Trainee positions are available in Gastroenterology & Hepatology based at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital as part of a rotational scheme within the South Western Sydney Area Health Service. Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital is a tertiary hospital with a busy Gastroenterology Department offering advanced training in general and interventional endoscopy including EUS, Gastroenterology and Hepatology servicing a diverse ethnic population. The trainees are supervised by the Professor in Medicine (Gastroenterology), 1 Senior Lecturer, 1 Staff Specialist and 3 VMO Specialists and take part in inpatient and outpatient management, research as well as an on-call service for haematemesis and melaena. The training scheme involves 6 – 12 month rotations between Bankstown-Lidcombe and Liverpool Hospitals.

Endocrinology/Diabetes/Hypertension – 1 position.

This position will provide experience in a busy diabetes/endocrine service with a large outpatient service and management of inpatients. Consultation on inpatients in other disciplines. Management of hypertension patients, many with a diabetic cause. Supervised by 1.8 full-time salaried specialists, 1 VMO in diabetes/endocrine and 1.4 Hypertension specialists. Aged Care Medicine – 2 positions 

Extensive clinical experience in an 80 bed inpatient Aged Care Service (acute, stroke, and rehabilitation), with supporting Memory Disorder Clinic, Aged Care Emergency Team and Aged Care Assessment Team services. Supervised by Associate Professor/Director and 6 Salaried Aged Care Specialists.

Nuclear Medicine – 1 position

The department offers a complete range of Nuclear Medicine studies using state of the art equipment. Additional experience is available in Ultrasound. This position is accredited for advanced training. Preferred applicants will possess FRACP Part I or DRACR Part II. Supervision provided by six salaried specialist staff.

Division of Critical Care


Anaesthetic Registrars – 4 positions 

Posts offering excellent experience in anaesthetics for a comprehensive range of elective and emergency surgery, obstetrics and endoscopy procedures. Support is provided by two seconded Registrars. Posts are appropriately supervised and supported by salaried and VMO specialists. Some involvement with intensive care will be required.

Unaccredited positions offering excellent experience in general intensive care with a significant respiratory care component. Support provided by one CMO and on site and on call VMO specialist cover.

Emergency Medicine Registrars – 2 positions 

Accredited positions for trainees (either for Part 1 or advanced) in the ACEM. Support provided by CMOs and salaried specialist Director, 1 full time and 1 part time staff specialists.

Positions provide excellent training for RMOs interested in pursuing a career in hospital based medicine. SRMOs considering traineeship in the ACEM will obtain a solid grounding in Emergency practice.

Enthusiastic and experienced CMO are invited to join the team. The Department sees nearly 32,000 patients per annum including a significant proportion of children. The case-mix is excellent and the activity level is very high. Support available from 3 salaried specialists.

Division of Surgery


Resident Medical Officers

Unaccredited Orthopaedic post offering wide exposure to trauma and elective Orthopaedic Surgery. Supervision and teaching by 5 VMO specialists. Supported by a seconded Orthopaedic Registrar post.

Unaccredited Surgical Registrar post offering wide exposure to general surgery and surgical subspecialties including urology, plastic surgery, ENT, Neuro surgery, Vascular surgery, breast & endocrine surgery, colorectal and upper gastrointestinal surgery with secondments to Fairfield and Campbelltown Hospitals.

Division of Obstetrics and Gynaecology / Paediatrics


O&G SRMOs – 4 positions

Positions available for Diploma Obstetrics experience of six months plus rotations in other disciplines including paediatrics depending on interests of applicants. The maternity unit is a busy one with approximately 1800 deliveries per year. A very active shared care network exists for antenatal care with close links to local general practitioners. Support provided by three seconded Registrars, salaried and VMO specialists.

Accredited Registrar Training positions are available for medical graduates to pursue FRANZCP as part of the SWSAHS training scheme. Positions are available within the general integrated Mental Health Services, consultation-liaison psychiatry or the highly regarded sub-speciality unit providing Aged Care Psychiatry.

Resident Medical Officers


RMO/SRMO General Rotations 

Mixture of tailored terms meeting the training requirements for individual applicants are available in Medicine, Surgery (see relevant sections above) O&G, Intensive Care, Emergency Medicine, Paediatrics, Psychiatry and Ambulatory Medicine. Campbelltown Hospital is the sole network hospital attached to Bankstown. All RMOs will be expected to undertake at least one and maximum two secondment terms to Campbelltown each year.
