Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital is situated in the heartland of Sydney some 20 kms from the centre of the city, close to Bankstown Airport.  Great value accommodation can be found in the area with access to entertainment and leisure facilities.

Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital is a 400 bed Principal Referral Teaching Hospital of the University of New South Wales and part of the Bankstown Health Service.  The compact two and three story complex has a distinctive modern image and has been designed to blend with the local environment.  A comprehensive range of medical and surgical specialties is available which include world-class diagnostic and critical care services.  

The Hospital prides itself on having a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with a commitment to providing career opportunities and staff development.  The Health Service actively promotes research and provides teaching for undergraduates, postgraduates and health service professionals.

The Hospital:

The hospital provides a wide range of Aged Care, Psychogeriatric and inpatient Rehabilitation services for Bankstown’s large ageing population.  It also provides a full range of acute clinical and diagnostic services in medicine including Cardiology, Endocrinology/Diabetes, Hypertension, Neurology, Oncology/Haematology, Psychiatry, Renal Dialysis, Respiratory Medicine and Rheumatology.  Surgical services include general surgery and subspecialty surgery in Colorectal and Upper Gastrointestinal surgery, Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Plastics, Urology and Vascular surgery.  Supporting disciplines include Emergency, Intensive and Coronary Care, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Paediatrics (including newborn nursery).  Diagnostic services include a full imaging and intervention Radiology service including a multi-slice helical CT Scanner, extensive Nuclear Medicine and Diagnostic Ultrasound facilities and full laboratory pathology support.

Key physical features of the hospital include a large modern Emergency Department, eight well-equipped operating theatres and a perioperative service with day surgery and endoscopy facilities.  A comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation and allied health facility includes Speech Pathology, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Nutrition and Dietetics, Podiatry Psychology and Social Work.  Other outpatient services include a specialist Diabetes Service, Ophthalmology, Antenatal Service and Oncology all conveniently located on the ground floor in conjunction with the Ambulatory Care Service.

Both Salaried and Visiting Medical Staff provide senior staff support.  Academic staff includes a full time Professor of Medicine (Gastroenterology) and an Associate Professor/Director in Aged Care.  Full time salaried specialists support respiratory medicine, ambulatory care, cardiology, oncology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, emergency, anaesthetic, aged care and psychiatry.

Community Health:

A comprehensive Community Health Service provides services for residents of the Bankstown Local Government Area.  A significant number of these residents are from non-English speaking background.  Services are provided in Child & Family Health, Youth Health, Adult Mental Health, Aged Care, Dental, drug & Alcohol, Palliative Care, Primary Health Nursing, Sexual Assault, Women’s Health, Community Nutrition, Stuttering, Ethnic Health, Health Promotion and Early Childhood & Development Program.

Staff Facilities:

The Health Service offers a wide range of facilities including a resource library with an extensive range of CD-ROM, on-line access and journals.  Education and conference facilities include an auditorium and a series of conference and meeting rooms of varying sizes.  Formal comprehensive training programs fulfil training requirements for registrars, residents and interns.  A childcare centre is provided, on-site vehicle parking, large staff cafeteria and 24 hour on-site security staff.

The diverse range of clinical exposure affords a solid foundation in all disciplines and is suitable for specialist or general practice training. All Interns/RMOs should expect to undertake secondment to Campbelltown Hospital.
