Advanced Trainee in Geriatrics
Liverpool Hospital has
an acute Aged Care Ward of 20 beds and a Transitional care unit of
20 beds. There are 3.5 Consultants at Liverpool and a further
position in the community including Fairfield, 4 Registrars and 2
Interns. The service provides rapid consults, an emergency
service, an acute inpatient service and home visits. There is a
close link to the Liverpool/Fairfield Aged Care Assessment Team.

Braeside Rehabilitation and Psycho-Geriatric Services. The unit is

Haematology Registrars
The Haematology Unit has 9
Staff Haematologists, 3 laboratory and 2 clinical registrars. The inpatient ward
in the Liverpool Health Service is shared with Radiation and Medical Oncology and
Palliative Care. The ward has 20 HEPA filtered beds and all modalities of treatment
are provided. Allogeneic and MUD marrow transplants are undertaken collaboratively at
other teaching Hospitals. Non-inpatient clinics are run at Liverpool, Bankstown and
Campbelltown Hospitals. The service provides consultative and inpatient services to
the whole South Western Sydney Health Area with around 2000 public hospital beds and
a population of nearly 900,000. The Unit is supported by a comprehensive haematology
laboratory with diagnostic PCR, flow and Autologous marrow transplantation program.
There is a limited research program run from the laboratory and the unit enrolls many
patients in clinical drug trials.
Support is provided for attendance at
relevant clinical conferences. The Haematology Department is fully accredited by JSAC
for 4 years specialty training in Haematology.

Advanced Trainee in Neurology
Requirements of this position are:

Liverpool has a comprehensive neurology and stroke service and a well equipped
Neurophysiology Department. The Neurology ward comprises 12 general neurology and 8
acute stroke beds (including a 4 bed high dependency Stroke Unit). The Neurophysiology
Department provides a full range of investigations: EEG, EEG telemetry, nerve
conduction and EMG tests, and evoked potentials. In addition the department provides a
range of neuro-audiological and neuro-vestibular investigations. The position is
accredited for Neurology training and includes experience with inpatient and
outpatient management and neurophysiological testing. Members of the department
conduct clinical research in areas of Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke, Epilepsy and

Advanced Trainee in Medical Oncology (Southwestern
Sydney Cancer Service) (x 2 positions)
The Department of Medical Oncology has two RACP
accredited positions available for training in Medical Oncology in
2005.Comprehensive training is facilitated by exposure to both
inpatients and non-inpatients as well as a combined tutorial training
programme with our Radiation Oncology trainees. Campbelltown Hospital
opened a new Cancer Centre in 2003 and appointees will rotate between
the Liverpool and Campbelltown Cancer Therapy Centres.
Rotations through Radiation Oncology, Haematology
and Palliative Care can be arranged to meet the needs of the trainee.
The Southwestern Sydney Cancer Service has a multidisciplinary
approach to the management of malignancy, with site specific clinics
in breast, lung, GI, GU, Gynae. Oncology and lymphomas and head and
neck cancers.
The Medical Oncology Department has an extensive
clinical research programme across both Cancer Centres and is
developing outcomes-based epidemiological research in conjunction with
the Radiation Oncologists at Liverpool. A computerised Medical
Oncology prescribing system, linked to a clinical care module is in
development.
Arrangements are in place to provide a rotational
training programme incorporating attachment to the Oncology Units at
the Newcastle Mater Misericordiae Hospital and The Canberra Hospital
at the request of the appointee.

Advanced Trainee in Palliative Care
This is a full time position with the registrar being
responsible for inpatient consultations, working as part of a dynamic
team which includes a Palliative Care Consultant, CNC and CNSs using a
multidisplinary approach in a teaching hospital. Opportunities also
exist for exposure to non-inpatient management in Palliative Care and
Medical Oncology. The registrar position is an integral part of the
ongoing management of inpatients primarily with cancer although
non-malignant conditions are often seen. There are opportunities for
experience in the acute inpatient unit at Braeside in Fairfield,
outpatient clinics and home visits in the Liverpool area. The learning
opportunities include attendance at regular clinical meetings held by
the Cancer Service including pathology, radiology and site specific
tumour meetings in breast, head and neck, gynaecological and lung
cancer. They must be willing to participate in the quality improvement
process and research. There is also opportunity to combine training with
up to 6 months Medical/Radiation Oncology. The applicant may be
undertaking either basic training or specialist training in palliative
medicine either through the Specialist Advisory Committee of the Royal
Australasian College of Physicians (Advanced Training) or the Chapter of
Palliative Medicine or through another College such as General Practice
or Radiology. This

Advanced Trainee in Renal Medicine
The South West Sydney Renal Service (SWSRS) seeks
applications from interested registrars and advanced trainees for two full time
vocational training positions. The SWSRS is based at the Liverpool Hospital, a level
6 networked tertiary referral hospital. The SWSRS is an energetic, focussed,
collegiate and progressive Renal Unit practicing at the leading edge of nephrological
practice. Registrars will gain wide clinical experience as well as exposure to
academic nephrology and clinical research.
Successful applicants may elect to participate
in a Renal Registrar rotation, to broaden clinical renal transplant exposure, through
a rotation to RPAH Hospital.
Area wide the SWSRS supports over 300
maintenance dialysis patients on both haemodialysis and CAPD, and cares for a diverse
inpatient and outpatient renal population. Clinical exposure includes hypertension,
hypertension in pregnancy, glomerulonephritis, acute and chronic renal failure, and
the broad spectrum of renal diseases. Experience will also be available in the care
of patients pre- and post- renal transplantation.
The Renal Consultant faculty has
individual interests in hypertension, tubular physiology, dialysis and transplantation.
The successful appointee(s) would experience a supportive clinical working
environment providing extensive and in depth teaching, the opportunity to accumulate
valuable professional experience and encouragement in knowledge development. During

The Respiratory Unit provides care of
in-patients with complex respiratory disease, an in-patient and out-patient consultation
and diagnostic service, a comprehensive tuberculosis service for SWS Area, and a

Specialists and one VMO. Valuable learning opportunities are provided by weekly radiology

participates in the NSW Rheumatology Registrar appointments process

Advanced Trainee in Radiation Oncology
The Cancer Therapy Centres at Liverpool
Hospital and Campbelltown have one radiation oncology registrar
position available
for 2005. The jobs are open to applicants at various stages of training as long as
they are at least two years from graduation, are committed to pursuing radiation
oncology as a career, have good communication skills and are keen to participate in
continuing education and research. Commitment for at least 12 months is expected.
The Liverpool Cancer Therapy Centre
has three linear accelerators with the new Campbelltown unit adding an additional
accelerator. Registrars will be expected to rotate with each other to provide
appropriate cover at Campbelltown. Other equipment available includes a high dose
rate brachytherapy unit, a state of the art 3 dimensional planning system (with PET
and MRI fusion) and a dedicated planning CT scanner. An IMRT programme
is under development. The centre prides itself on providing a high quality and highly successful
training programme for the part I and part II examinations. The centre also has a
clinical research institute (CCORE) which provides the infrastructure for both
individual and collaborative research.

The department provides a comprehensive range
of diagnostic and therapeutic tertiary referral services for Nuclear
Medicine and PET (Philips Allegro).
It establishes the 2nd Medicare-funded PET services in NSW
since July 2002. The department is accredited for training in PET.

clinical activity in PET, research, data collection (demographic and
multi-centre prospective clinical protocols) as per Medicare-funding

Neurosurgery Registrar
One neurosurgery registrar position is available. The Neurosurgery
Department at Liverpool Hospital provides a comprehensive neurosurgery service for the
people of South West Sydney Area Health Service. The surgical caseload includes trauma,
tumours, neurovascular, and complex spine instrumentation for tumours, deformity or
trauma. There are three neurosurgeons primarily based at the hospital. Liverpool
receives acute referrals from the area including Campbelltown, Bankstown, Fairfield,
Bowral and Camden Hospitals. Because of this, the neurosurgery department workload has
a large component of acute or major neurosurgical cases. The department has recently
been enhanced and is equipped with a full range of operating equiment. Educational
meetings include weekly neuroradiology, trauma, surgical audit meetings and neurosurgery
journal club. Other meetings include spine meeting and histology meetings (monthly).
Registrars will be encouraged to attend outside courses or conferences.
The registrar will be given opportunities for development of
clinical and operative skills and for independent decision making and procedures.
The neurosurgical department has been accredited for one advanced neurosurgical trainee.
This allows for greater independence and clinical exposure for the Registrar. The
on-call requirements are around one in three. The department conducts research in the
area of clinical epidemiology and biostatistics. The department staff include a Senior
Research Officer who is available to supervise registrar research projects. The position
is ideal for registrars seeking broad clinical experience to prepare for application
for advanced training in neurosurgery or for surgical registrars interested in learning
neurosurgery procedures for rural or remote surgical careers.

Streamed SRMO (12 months & 6 months):
Positions will be available between Liverpool and Fairfield Hospitals. These positions are
suitable for Diploma training or for entry into the MRANZCOG training
program. The Liverpool Health Service Training Scheme offers excellent
training opportunities for all levels of trainees. A wide range of
subspecialty experience is offered. There is a quarantined academic half
day each week for formal preparation towards postgraduate exams. As
there are 18 trainees in the program, there is good peer support and
supervision. The senior staff has a strong commitment to training. All
appointees must participate in the overtime roster, which includes
night, and weekend shifts. Remuneration and conditions according to
Public Hospital (Medical Officers) Award.

Accredited positions in the Liverpool Training scheme
for basic and advanced ANZCA training. Liverpool Hospital is the principal hospital
for the scheme with rotations to other hospitals. Applicants must meet ANZCA

Critical Care Registrar / Senior Residents Medical Officers in
Critical Care
Ideally suited for those looking to enter accredited
training in Intensive Care, Anaesthetics or Emergency Medicine. Positions rotate
within the 3 specialties. The emphasis is on skills acquisition and teaching for the FANZCA and FACEM primary
examinations. The position provides extensive experience in ICU and as a member of
the Trauma Team and Medical Emergency Team.

ICU Registrars and Senior Registrars
Accredited for 24 months of Joint Faculty of
Intensive Care core training. The 24 bed ICU provides a broad case-mix of adult patients
including Trauma, Neurosurgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery. Liverpool Hospital provides the
Major Trauma Service for South Western Sydney Area Health Service. There is a successful
exam orientated training program facilitated by the 6 Staff Specialists. Research is
encouraged and supported. Possible rotations exist to medicine and the New Children's
Hospital ICU.

Emergency Registrars
Applications are sought for Emergency Registrars
for Year 2005. Liverpool is a tertiary hospital and the ED sees a wide
and varied case load of 46,000 patients per year with an admission
rate of approximately 35%. The Emergency Department is accredited for
2 years advanced training as well as 6 months Paediatrics and has a
significant trauma load. There is an active teaching program at all
levels of training, with a history of successful preparation for both
the primary and fellowship exams. Rotations include ICU, Anaesthetics,
Paediatric Emergency at the Children's Hospital at Westmead, Retrieval
and Medicine. A new state of the art Emergency Department is due for
completion in the first half of 2005. This is an opportunity to

Physicians and Registrars in a dynamic unit.

Clinical Superintendent in Emergency Medicine
Applications are sought for this unique and
exciting position in Liverpool Emergency Department. It is
available to Emergency Registrars approaching their fellowship
exam in the next year or having completed the exam and looking to
complete research.
The position is 50% clinical on floor cover and 50% non-clinical
duties, which include Q.A., research, and education. You are
responsible to the ED Director and the position is for 1 year
only. Remuneration is at the level of Clinical Superintendent
Level 1.
