Haematology Registrars

The Haematology Unit has 9 Staff Haematologists, 2 laboratory and 2 clinical registrars. The inpatient ward in the Liverpool Health Service is shared with Radiation and Medical Oncology. The ward has 20 HEPA filtered beds and all modalities of treatment are provided. Allogeneic and MUD marrow transplants are undertaken collaboratively at other teaching Hospitals. Non-inpatient clinics are run at Liverpool, Bankstown, Bowral and Campbelltown Hospitals. The service provides consultative and inpatient services to the whole South Western Sydney Health Area with around 2100 public hospital beds and a population of nearly 800,000. The Unit is supported by a comprehensive haematology laboratory with diagnostic PCR, flow and Autologous marrow transplantation program. There is a limited research program run from the laboratory and the unit enrols many patients in clinical drug trials.

Support is provided for attendance at relevant clinical conferences. The Haematology Department is fully accredited by JSAC for 4 years specialty training in Haematology

Microbiology Registrars

The Department of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases currently has 5.6 full time Staff Specialists, 1 microbiology and 1 clinical infectious diseases registrar. The Department provides the microbiology diagnostic service and infectious diseases clinical service to all hospitals in SWSAHS, participates in ongoing undergraduate and postgraduate continuing education and contributes to the development of research in respect to Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. The Department is divided into sub sections of bacteriology, serology, virology, molecular diagnosis, mycobacteriology, mycology, parasitology and public health research. In addition to the routine laboratory services, the Department is also a specialised reference centre for parasite morphologic identifications, HIV confirmatory testing, Hepatitis C supplemental testing and PCR, meningococcal typing (one of the designated NSW Public Health Laboratories), and has the NSW Staphylococcal Reference Facility. All positions are accredited for training for FRCPA for five years for single discipline trainees and two years for general trainees..

Anatomical Pathology Registrars

The Department of Anatomical Pathology is the central facility for examination and reporting of tissue pathology, provision of autopsy services and cytological examination in the South Western Sydney Area Health Service. Positions are based in the laboratories of SWAPS situated at Liverpool Hospital, but registrars may also be required to visit other hospitals in the SWSAHS. Pathology is provided for more 2100 hospital inpatients and associated outpatients of Liverpool, Bowral, Bankstown-Lidcombe, Camden, Campbelltown and Fairfield Hospitals. All positions are accredited for training for FRCPA for four years for single discipline trainees and two years for general trainees.
