The Stuttering Unit is part of Bankstown Health Service. Bankstown is a south western suburb of Sydney, and is one of the most culturally diverse communities in NSW with more than 100 languages spoken.

Stuttering Unit History

1985 Stuttering Unit established at Lidcombe Hospital as a joint student unit with Cumberland College of Health Sciences

1990 Student unit closes. Stuttering Unit continues as a specialist speech pathology service

1995 Lidcombe Hospital closes and Stuttering Unit moves to Bankstown Health Service

1997 Stuttering Unit receives NSW Premier's Inaugural Public Sector Award for development of the Lidcombe Program

1998 Stuttering Unit receives enhancement from NSW Health Department to expand the adult stuttering treatment service

2001 Stuttering Unit is a Finalist in the Baxter Awards, Embracing Innovation category
